2024 in Pisticci…mostly about portrait painting…..

The morning started with me watching Titus Meeuws  painting the portrait of another Dutch artist while he painted Titus. And they chatted about their experiences in art as they worked. It was fascinating.

I needed to go to the supermarket  and decided to pop into the Meetmarket and see if they had any tiny water bottles.

Now I have everything I need .

I’ve also added a white acrylic pen and I found a water brush when I was looking for charcoal.
Fits nicely.

Then it was time to get set up for painting a self portrait.

I thought that a table on wheels would be useful…..but settled for my spare gas heater covered in a plastic tablecloth. It has wheels!

Then I thought that my wheelie stool would be good to sit on , but only 2 screws were holding the seat on so I had to fix it.

Fixing the stool. I also had to tape the easel as it isn’t too secure.

I had planned to use an old canvas which I’d painted over. I was also going to draw myself first with charcoal. Only I couldn’t find any. It must be somewhere! So I used some black pastel. After 10 minutes I gave up and decided to start again later.

This time I found a new canvas and painted it with yellow ochre acrylic paint. And after more searching I found a charcoal pencil.

First try.
Before I painted the new canvas  yellow.

I took a photo of myself in approximately  the position in which I was going to paint myself.

I look grim. ( I’d  also forgotten that the mirror is tinted. )
After about an hour and a half messing around with charcoal and an eraser I got this far. ( I sprayed it with hairspray so that it wouldn’t mix with the paint later as it was a bit darker than I had meant it to be.)
I didn’t mean to paint it today but I got curious.

It was quite difficult and I might do another one with much better lighting. I couldn’t  see my eyes hardly at all. It’s  strange painting with oil paint. I think it would have been easier to paint on a  bigger canvas as well.

Other than that….it could have been worse. It was marginally more flattering than the photo I took. I looked better in real life. I’m glad I painted my hat.

And apart from the lighting…which I can improve, my set up worked. I had my portable gas heater as near as I could get it so that I wasn’t cold.

Now it’s  wine time .

Cheers🍷🍷

( It’s  cold and windy outside. I haven’t  seen Fluffy in two days. I hope she’s  okay.)
