This morning I arrived at the mural site at 9.30am. I had thought of maybe drawing the remainder of the saint ,but it was deemed best to paint the Saint’s face first incase it rained .
That meant going up the ladder….and it was quite windy. But I was prepared. I had brought string so that I could hang my big art bag from the ladder and hopefully make it a bit more secure. As there were no particularly big gusts of wind I don’t know if it would have worked or not.
I quite enjoyed myself . It was interesting painting a face on a wall while up a ladder. I had a small palette which I balanced on the top rung and an old canvas shoulder bag slung round my neck with some paintbrushes, kitchen roll and an open bottle of water for diluting and rinsing my brush.
And it looks good. Really good according to a lot of people. I am very pleased and happy about that because it is an honour to paint someone so special in Pisticci. I think I wrote that last night….but it was even more evident today.
And I am enjoying being with people. There’s a lot of laughing and camaraderie.
After a lunch break I was back at 3pm. I needed to paint the gold crown above the Saint’s head and as I was a bit worried about being even higher up and the wind blowing I asked a kindly gentleman to hold the ladder for me.
I think that was pretty sensible of me. So that was done safely and then he helped me again by holding the ladder at an angle against the wall so I could use it as a ruler to draw a long pole which the Saint is holding. ( not sure what it is called.)
After that I finished drawing the rest of the figure….from yet another change of photo.
Because rain could be a problem and the hairspray which would fix the pencil drawing was not there one of the artists suggested I just quickly draw the figure with paint. That turned out to be a great idea. I was so much freer with a paint brush. I had the drawing as a rough guide ,but my painted drawing was so much more lively and confident.
I left around 5pm while some people were still painting. Tomorrow , weather permitting we will be back at 9.30am. There is still a lot to do.
I feel very lucky tonight to be here . I never dreamt that my life would be like this.
